MOUNT OLYMPUS

Mount Olympus is the highest mountain of Greece and the second highest in the Balkans. Mytikas is the highest peak (2917 m). There are almost 9 more peaks which exceed 2600 m. The predominance of limestone greatly influences the climate and the vegetation. The basic features are the deep valleys and steep slopes (Enipea Valley). Alpine valleys cover the area above the forest levels (2,500 m).There is a significant variety of fauna and flora. Many of these are rare or under threat. The area makes up the core of the National Park which was founded in 1938.

You can visit:

- The refuge which is located in Stavros next to the asphalt road at an altitude of 944 m. It can accommodate 30 people and has a very well organized kitchen. Because of its easy access it functions as a restaurant, too. You will enjoy the amazing view over Pierria Plain and the sea. The refuge is open daily from May until the end of October, weekends yearly-round and holidays.

- The new Monastery of Agios Dionysios. You will visit the church, the grave of Saint Dionysios, the Agion Spilaion (holy cave) where ascetics have lived as hermits, the source of holy water and the amazing museum which houses precious heirlooms.

- Litochoro is a small town at the foot of Mount Olympus. You have two hours free time either to enjoy the picturesqueness and the majestic images or a guided canyoning in Enipeas (optional).
